2025 CSA Week #20 Update

Brent

Dear CSA Shareholders,

As we conclude the 2025 CSA program, the team at Miller Plant Farm would like to take a minute to recap our growing season and thank all of our members for another successful year!

While we have seen plenty of the normal ups and downs of the growing season, it turned out to be a wonderful year. We saw above-average rainfall to start the summer, then August turned very dry. With those levels of dry and wet we tend to encounter challenges not often seen when your produce is picked up each week. When you see above-average rainfall there are some crops such as sweet corn, that love it! We had a great stretch of sweet corn harvested in July, which required no irrigation water, allowing for us to concentrate on other needs rather than spending time overhead watering the corn - a time consuming, and in some instances, a very manual process. That being said, too much water on some crops can be detrimental to their harvest. While we weren't watering corn, we did have to spend more time scouting all of the other crops. It's important to try and stay ahead of potential disease issues in those conditions. One way we do that is with field scouting. Experience also plays a role in knowing what to keep an eye out for and knowing the true amounts of rain following the few rain events that took place can help as well. As we moved into the end of summer and beginning of fall we were met with a pretty significant stretch of dry weather, which means irrigation must be done. Here at the Farm we are blessed with good water sources which allow us to reach a majority of our crops including sweet corn, but not all. That stretch of dry weather brought very long days of moving irrigation pipes so that fall crops were given the water needed to get started and also continued healthy growth. With team efforts we were able to overcome the dry stretch and always held hope the next chance of rain would come sooner than later! It finally came in September and helped us to finish out a very successful growing season.

From all of us at Miller Plant Farm we want to Thank You for a great year and hope your families enjoyed many weeks of great produce picked up at our farm! Hope to see everyone back in 2026!

Thank you,
Farmer Brent
