  • Lemon BalmSweet lemon-mint scent.
  • Easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil. Spreads rapidly.
  • Uses: Fresh leaves for tea and salads. Rub the leaves to enjoy a burst of lemon fragrance, or use it in fresh bouquets for aromatherapy.
  • Health Benefits: Aerial parts in tea for colds, flu, depression, headache, and indigestion. Sedative and antiviral.

Boxwood BasilAttractive, spreading silver-green plant with lemony aroma and flavor is great for potpourris, tea, chicken, fish, vegetables and herb vinegars. This native of northwestern India should be started indoors early or outside after danger of frost.

Lime BasilA rare and hard to find seed variety, Lime basil is sweet and fragrant with a mild citrus taste. The lime scent of the bright green, lance-shaped leaves pair perfectly with lemon basil for a full explosion of tangy fresh flavor. Excellent for flavoring sauces, dressings and desserts.

  • LovageAs a culinary herb, lovage has a celery-like flavor, but richer with hints of fennel and curry.
  • Uses: Use the stems, leaves, and seeds in the same fashion as celery in spring tonic salads and with potato and poultry dishes.
  • Health Benefits: Aromatic stimulant; warming digestive tonic. Lovage is used as a tea for its diuretic effect, and as a carminative (relief of gas).

  • MarjoramMarjoram is an elegant and versatile culinary herb with a fragrance similar to oregano, but sweeter and with a hint of balsam. Wonderfully aromatic.
  • Uses: Marjoram is great with veal, beef, lamb, fish, and poultry as well as vegetables, potatoes, and mushrooms. It complements garlic, onion, thyme, and basil and is often used as a substitute for oregano.
  • Health Benefits: The herb contains many minerals and vitamins that are essential for optimum health and wellness. Also known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

  • OreganoOregano is a perennial, with some winter protection.
  • It grows to 20 inches, with purple flowers and spade-shaped, olive-green leaves.
  • Uses: Oregano's most prominent modern use is as the staple herb of Italian-American cuisine as well as the “pizza herb”.
  • Health Benefits: Oregano is high in antioxidant activity.

  • PeppermintThis perennial herb thrives in moist soils (but not water logged) in part sun to shade.
  • Plants grow to 12” to 30” tall and spread by underground runners.
  • Uses: Most commonly used for flavouring in teas. Peppermint flavoring is found in ice cream, chewing gum and even shampoos.
  • Health Benefits: Aids in digestion and possibly improves memory. One animal study showed that peppermint may have radioprotective effects for cancer patients undergoing radiation.
