Greetings from the cauliflower field! I know summer seems to just be heating up, but we are already planning for the fall. This week we started planting brassicas, which is the family term for cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage. When planting brassicas it takes a lot of water to keep the plants alive in this hot weather. The most difficult part of growing brassicas is the transplanting stage where the plant goes from the greenhouse to the field. The plant needs to root into the soil and to do this we will irrigate them almost every day for about a week. After this first week, they have pushed some roots out into the soil and are acclimated to being outside.
I have been scouting the cantaloupe and watermelon fields. We have just started to pick cantaloupes. This warm tropical weather is moving them along. Watermelons are at the stage where they are sizing up. We are irrigating them every other day and they also love this hot weather. This combination should make for a sweet and juicy crop. (Doesn’t that sound good right now!)
Over the next week or two we will be phasing out the late spring vegetables and the summer crops will be in full swing. I am looking forward to them as much as you are!
Once again thank you for supporting our family,
We list the types of items you will likely receive each week. Due to frequent and last minute changes in harvest, quantities distributed are to be determined on pick up day. Full Share typically receives larger portions of given items than small share. Actual share items are subject to change depending upon availability, if necessary.
